Abstract

New technology is making it possible to see both the "forest" and the "trees" in biological systems. Systems biology might be best defined as the attempt to integrate new discoverydriven technologies that allow us to track biological networks holistically with classic hypothesis-driven approaches. Mathematical biology, in the form of bioinformatics to elucidate the structure of biological networks, as well as conceptual and detailed modeling to illuminate how network structure relates to function, will play an increasingly critical role in this effort. In this truly exciting era of cardiovascular biology, we can glimpse how the mysteries of human cardiovascular diseases might ultimately be solved. © 2010 American Heart Association.
