Abstract
The performance enhancement of asphalt binders by incorporating polyethylene has been a subject of significant research for scientists working on flexible pavements and environmental sustainability. Various types of polyethylene (PE), including low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), are utilized in asphalt binders. To fully leverage the benefits of PE, it is crucial to verify its characteristics. This study investigates asphalt performance using LDPE and HDPE modifiers. The impact of different types of polyethylene on the performance of asphalt was examined through conventional properties and rheological properties such as Penetration, softening point, ductility, rotational viscosity, failing temperature as well as Superpave rutting parameter (G*/sinδ). Storage stability criteria and microscopic characterization were employed to access compatibility. The findings revealed that both the LDPE and HDPE have a good impact on high-temperature characteristics of asphalt binder; however, among the tested samples, HDPE-modified asphalt exhibited the highest G*/sinδ, and viscosity, making it a superior choice for improving rutting resistance. The LDPE shows greater storage stability compared to HDPE, making it particularly suitable for application in asphalt binders.
