Abstract

Objectives: This study focuses on evaluation of the performance of various image enhancement techniques which were applied on dental X-ray images. Methods/Analysis: The images were calculated for comparing between input images and out images from three enhancement methods: imadjust, histogram equalization (HE) and contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE). A collection of eight dental x-ray images are chosen to apply these techniques on them. The x-ray images are-in general-low in contrast and dosage of radiation. This loss of image quality can be treated with enhancement process. Four quality image factors were used to evaluate the resulted images involved Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Mean Squared Error (MSE), Maximum Error (MAXERR) and (L2rat). Findings: The quality of images had been raised and improved by these techniques for diagnosing goal. The results show that the enhancement methods chose to enhance the collected images led to more qualified images than original ones. Application/Improvements: The CLAHE method is better than other enhancement methods according to the values of quality image factors and the evaluation of expert dentists.
