Abstract

This chapter discusses diuretic drugs. The belief that thiazide diuretics cause or predispose to myocardial infarction and sudden death had obtained no support whatsoever from the results of large long-term prospective controlled trials. Diuretic-induced ventricular ectopic activity is most likely to occur during chronic treatment of patients with underlying coronary artery disease. The chapter reviews the influence of diuretic therapy on blood lipid and lipoprotein concentrations and the epidemiology and pathophysiology of sexual dysfunction related to antihypertensive drugs, including diuretics. © 1988 Elsevier Science Publishers B.V.
