Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Sport Education Model and Direct Instruction Model in teaching Track and Field in Physical Education. Forty seven students participated in this study (24 boys and 23 girls) spread over two classes. One class (21 students) participated in a Sport Education unit, while the other (26 students) participated in a Direct Instruction unit, both with 20 lessons of three Track and Field events: shot put, triple-jump and hurdles. Non-parametric tests were used, particularly the Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests. Although results showed improvements for both instruction models from the initial test (pre-test) to the final test (post-test 1) and to the retention test (post-test 2), Sport Education was more effective. Students of this model improve in all skills, which did not happen with students of the Direct Instruction model. Moreover, students from Direct Instruction Model had better performance at the beginning of the unit which faded in its end; at the post-test 1 Sport Education students showed better performance.
