Victoria amazonica ou Victoria regia?

RESUMO Um resumo da história taxonômica do gênero Victoria Lindl. é apresentado. É mostrado que a espécie freqüentemente chamada Victoria regia Lindl., em verdade deve ser chamada Victoria amazonica (Poeppig) Sowerby. Embora Sowerby tenha feito a nova combinação nomenclatural no ano de 1850, o nome correto é ainda pouco usado. Espera o autor que o trabalho chame a atenção para a nomenclatura e estimule o uso do nome correto — Victoria amazonica.Summary A brief history of the taxonomy of the genus Victoria Lindl. is given. It is observed that the species still frequently referred to as Victoria regia Liindley should in fact be called Victoria amazonica (Poeppig) Sowerby. Although Sowerby made the new combination in 1850, the correct name is seldom used in South America. It is hoped that this paper will draw atention to the nomenclature and encourage the use of the name Victoria amazonica.
