Abstract

French scientists are very ambivalent about communicating their work to the general public. Three very different visions of popularisation were met during the study that is presented here - transmission of results, description of the scientists'practice, or reassurance of the public. They are nevertheless unanimous in criticising the presence of scientists on the screen. The correspondence between these positions and the wishes of the public is not always adequate.
