Abstract

This article discusses the concept of raupatu – land confiscation – and its consequences in both cultural and material senses. It also examines the significance of this event to the Waikato people. The lead up to the Crown’s massive confiscations is provided, as is the subsequent history, and some of the intricate cultural aspects surrounding the ensuing settlement.
