Abstract
A three dimensional primitive equation model was used to study the formation of river forced estuarine plumes. The physical processes controlling the circulation in moderately stratified estuaries and the deviations from the laterally averaged circulation pattern caused by them are discussed. Supercritical, subcritical, diffusive supercritical and diffusive subcritical plume types over the shalf were defined.
