Abstract
The article discusses the relationship between heritage and tourism development in cities de¬clared as World Heritage from the perception of the local community. This study analyzed the trajectory of Diamantina, a city located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, listed by the Heritage Institute for National Artistic -IPHAN in 1938 and in 1999 received the title of Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. In order to verify the relationship and involvement of the local population with the heritage and tourism, elab¬orated a form addressing questions about identity, community and relationships between residents, heritage and tourism. As a result, there were discrepancies between what the community considers as equity to legacy and has been recognized by national and international organizations and the need for a deep work of cultural recognition among residents.
