We isolated arena virus RNA from white-toothed wood rats (Neotoma leucodon) captured in a region of Mexico in which wood rats are food for humans. Analyses of nucleotide and amino acid sequence data indicated that the wood rats were infected with a novel Tacaribe sero complex virus, proposed name Real de Catorce virus.
