Abstract

ABSTRACT: This note considers how chlorophyll, as esti- mated from Coastal Zone Color Scanner (Nimbus 7 satellite) data, is related to the chlorophyll concentration in the oceanic water column. In spite of some limitations, the remotely sensed chlorophyll concentration can be used as an index of the mean water column chlorophyll. Chlorophyll imagery provides synoptic measurements, impractical to obtain from ships alone, and hence may be of considerable importance in phytoplankton ecology.
