Abstract
This essay discusses the construction of the characters in Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, based on Martin Esslin's studies on the Theatre of the Absurd, a form of drama that emphasizes the absurdity of human existence by employing split subjects, repetitions and meaninglessness as artistic reactions to World War II.
