Abstract

In the past few decades efforts have been made at a global level to achieve sustainable development. The development of sustainability is greatly dependent on three pillars of sustainability, which are defined in this chapter. Growth of any nation can be assessed by measuring its ways of attaining sustainability. Therefore, sustainability plays an important role in terms of growth and development of a nation and is needed for economic and social development, which in turn is responsible for environmental sustainability. This chapter precisely focuses on the three interdependent pillars of sustainability with emphasis on the primary goals of sustainability and methods to achieve them. While achieving sustainability, there are many challenges, such as developmental gaps, which are discussed in the chapter, along with methods to overcome these challenges.
