Abstract
This entry provides an overview of the diversity of literatures written in the Hindi language in the Indian subcontinent. Covering the precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial periods of South Asian history, it illustrates numerous transitions and transformations in the Hindi language and its literary traditions. It also focuses on the politics of language, religion, and nationalism in the subcontinent and its effect on the formation of literary canons and histories in the Hindi language.
