Abstract
In this chapter we: (1) introduce the reader to the Latina/o community; (2) examine the historical and contemporary origins of internalized oppression; (3) discuss the common manifestations and behavioral health implications of internalized oppression; and (4) introduce programs designed to challenge internalized oppression in Latina/o communities. Personal narratives from the authors, all of whom are part of the Latina/o community, are integrated in select parts of the chapter to bring some of the discussed concepts to life. It is hoped that this chapter will inspire dialogue and increased attention to internalized oppression among Latinas/os. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)
