Abstract

The article gives an account of the main current controversies regarding the purposes of the university in European and Latin American contexts while addressing the Bologna Plan as a driving force for the discussion of these matters. Methodologically, we carried out the search, selection and subsequent thematic and chronological grouping of the reference frames present in indexed databases, books and book chapters (with an editorial committee) that were considered pertinent to the subject at hand. The results show similarities and differences in the controversies identified by authors from the different existing contexts. The European discourse moves mainly between a critical conception of the past and a nostalgic one, while the Latin American one emphasizes a mercantile approach to higher education, and in that it coincides with the European one, but it also emphasizes the desire to restrain the acculturation process product of foreign ethnocentrism.
