Abstract

In the days of miniaturization, antenna that occupy smaller area are preferred in wireless system designs. In this paper, design of compact wide band slot cut and shorted equilateral triangular microstrip antenna is proposed. Detailed study highlighting the resonant mode based explanation for wideband response is explained. In shorted antenna wider bandwidth is realized due to optimum spacing between shorted TM1/2,0and TM1/2,1modes. Based on this insight a formulation for resonant length at shorted patch modes is presented. These equations yield closer prediction with the frequencies obtained using simulation. As a design methodology, using proposed formulation procedure to realize similar design of shorted and slot cut equilateral triangular antenna at different frequencies on air suspended substrate is explained. This procedure yields similar wide band response, and thus proposed formulation is useful in the design of shorted antenna at given specific frequency as per the application of interest.
