Asia en el mundo del siglo XXI

Abstract

En este análisis inevitablemente impresionista de la parte del futuro de Asia que ya se puede leer en su presente, se discute primero el debate sobre el llamado ‘milagro asiático’ y la forma como ese milagro podrá continuar en los próximos veinte o treinta años. Se refieren después algunos aspectos de la evolución previsible de Asia a mediano y largo plazo, demográfica y económica, y se discuten sus consecuencias en términos de tres retos a los que será necesario responder: la utilización de recursos naturales y el medio ambiente, el combate a la pobreza y, crucial para la respuesta a los otros dos, la gobernabilidad. Finalmente, se discuten algunos aspectos e implicaciones políticas de todo esto.This unavoidably impressionistic analysis of that part of the future of Asia that may already be read in its present, begins with a discussion of the so–called ‘Asian miracle’, of its diverging interpretations and of how it may continue during the next twenty or thirty years. Some aspects of the foreseeable demographic and economic evolution of Asia in the medium and long term are then presented. This is followed by a discussion of the implications of this evolution in terms of three main challenges that Asia must face if it is to succeed: natural resource use and the environment, the fight against poverty and, central to the success in responding to those two, governance. A last section discusses some political implications.
