Abstract
The paper analyses processes of expansion and delimitation of urban areas in a group of medium-sized Spanish inner cities. The object of interest is the dynamics in these municipalities, their typology, and territorial scope. Census data on population and housing between 1981 and 2011 have been used. The methodology is a scatter diagram based on a model that links each city with the behaviour of the municipalities surrounding it. The bibliography on urban dispersion processes in different contexts is reviewed. The scope of analysis is 30 km around each of the 70 cities chosen, with populations of between fifty and three hundred thousand inhabitants. The results enable a proposed urban area to be established and four types of municipalities to be identified based on their housing and population dynamics.
