Abstract

Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is a common glomerular injury that appears primary in children. It but is usually first seen and diagnosed in children aged two to five years old. It affects more boys than girls. Parents' knowledge and practices are important to prevent complications from the disease. To assess the knowledge and practices of parents regarding home management of children with nephrotic syndrome; To find out the relationship between knowledge and practices of parents regarding home management of children with nephrotic syndrome; To find out the association of knowledge and practices of parents regarding home management of children with nephrotic syndrome with selected demographic variables. Non experimental descriptive survey design was used in this study. 60 parents were selected by non-probability purposive sampling technique. Parents of children with nephrotic syndrome were included and physically and mentally challenged were excluded from the study. The study was conducted at Maharishi Markandeshwar Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Hospital-Mullana, Ambala; Civil Hospital-Ambala; Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College and Hospital-Karnal, Haryana. Structured knowledge questionnaire and practice rating scale was used to collect the data by using interview technique. The findings of the study revealed that majority of the parents had below average knowledge. Majority of the parents 80% had below average knowledge regarding home management of children with nephrotic syndrome. 15% of parents had average score. Only 5% of parents had good knowledge regarding home management of children with nephrotic syndrome. Majority of the parents 56(93.3%) had poor practices and regarding home management of children with nephrotic syndrome. 4(6.7%) had fair practices regarding home management of children with nephrotic syndrome. There was a positive co-relation between knowledge scores and practices scores (0.25). ANOVA computed between knowledge score and selected variables of parents i.e. occupation status of mother / father (F=3.077, p=0.016), monthly income of family (F= 2.581, p=0.047), exposure of information (F=3.482, p=0.001) and ANOVA computed between practices score and selected variables of parents i.e. occupation status of mother / father (F=3.136, p=0.015),exposure of information (F=4.661, p=0.001)which were found statistically significant at 0.05 level of significance, whereas ANOVA computed between knowledge and practices score with selected variables of child were not found statistically significant at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that parents had below average knowledge and poor practices regarding home management of children with nephrotic syndrome.
