Idoneidad de los rankings universitarios

Abstract

Rankings are part of the higher education system since they act on the expectations of users and the response of institutions. Their influence may even modify or interfere in the prevailing model of university in a society. Besides the public or private condition of the issuing agents, what is determinant is that they should be based on criteria and methodologies acknowledged by the respective academic communities, they should be independent and impartial, and they should use a plurality of criteria and quantifiable data. Prestige or reputation may result in unreliable describers of quality or excellence if they are not integrated with a number of other evaluation criteria.Los rankings integran el sistema de educación superior, en cuanto actúan sobre las expectativas de los usuarios y las respuestas de las instituciones, y su influencia puede llegar a modificar o intervenir el modelo de universidad vigente en una sociedad dada. Al margen de la calidad pública o privada de los agentes emisores, lo determinante es que se basen en criterios y metodologías reconocidos por las comunidades académicas respectivas, sean independientes e imparciales y usen una pluralidad de criterios y datos cuantificables. Prestigio o reputación pueden resultar descriptores más inseguros de calidad o excelencia si no integran una pluralidad de otros criterios de evaluación.
