Abstract

Hiatal hernia is a condition in which abdominal structures, mainly the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) and the stomach, are proximally displaced into the mediastinum, through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm. This article focuses on the diagnosis, classification, pathophysiology, and treatment of hiatal hernias.
