Abstract

Numerical simulations of cosmologically expanding systems containing 1000 particles have been performed and analysed in order to measure the efficiency of the tidal torque mechanism for generating galactic rotation. The results show that this process is considerably less efficient than has recently been estimated theoretically though it is consistent with recent observations of the rotation of giant elliptical galaxies.
