Abstract

The Raman spectra of AlCl3-l-butylpyridinium chloride liquids at ambient temperatures have been recorded for the 0.75:1.0 to 2.0:1.0 molar composition range, respectively. Four absorption bands each for A1C14- and for A12C17- ionic species were assigned on the basis of higher temperature vibrational spectral results of AlCl3-alkali metal chloride systems. The association equilibrium constant for A12C17- ion formation, 2A1C14- + A12C16 ⇌ A12C17-, is significantly larger than that for the A1C13-MC1 melts, where M represents an alkali metal cation. © 1978, American Chemical Society.
