Recent advances in the medical management of glaucoma

Abstract

Automated perimetry and newer imaging techniques for assessing structural changes to the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer have added new dimensions for early diagnosis and followup of glaucoma. Major improvements have taken place in the ability to effectively deliver safer drug therapy for glaucoma. A better understanding of the pathophysiology of glaucoma has provided better guidelines with clearer outcome measures such as target intraocular pressure and intraocular pressure reduction from baseline. Newer modalities to improve ocular perfusion and neuro protection may help preserve the vision of glaucoma patients. Laser iridotomy is the definitive treatment for angle closure glaucoma.
