Repression to the Atlantic slave traffic and the partisan dispute in the provinces: The attacks to disembarkations in Pernambuco during the praieiro government, 1845-1848

Abstract

After 1831, the Atlantic slave trade had to be carried out on the natural harbors of the Brazilian coast, whose owners participated in local and provincial politics. During the "quinquênio liberal" (1844-48) - the party in power in Pernambuco - sent the Police to apprehend the cargo of slave ships consigned to their local political opponents. The repression against the slave trade was a political and economic instrument in the struggle against the Conservative party, who armed itself against the praieira Police, made up of planters who kept the captives for themselves.
