Abstract

2,5-Dimethyl-4-hydroxy- [3658-77-3] and 2,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy-3(2H)furanone [4077-47-8] decompn. followed first-order kinetics and was dependent on the pH of the soln. (range tested pH 2-8). The stability of these compds. had an optimum at pH 4. The half-lives of 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy- and 2,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy-3(2H)furanone at room temp. and pH 4 were 100 and 320 days, resp.
