Abstract

Accurate weather data is important for planning our day-to-day activities. On the basis of bus information management system proposed, this work incorporates the strengths of local information processing and moving buses for increasing the measurement precision and supplying new sensing data, which establishes a real-time weather monitoring system. The proposed weather monitoring system relates to a wireless bus information management system, which includes bus stop and vehicle management subsystems. The management signals are transmittable between bus stops and the vehicle. Based on vehicle management signals, the bus stop management subsystem can obtain information about the neighboring weather conditions. Similarly, with the bus stop management signals, the vehicle management subsystem can help passengers make the decision (e.g., their travel plans) with the monitoring data. Moreover, the information, such as the temperature, rainfall and humidity meteorological monitoring data, can be applied to supplement the analysis of air quality monitoring. The proposed distributed wireless system is detailed by a prototype implementation and a simulation analysis, which is shown to be feasible and scalable.
