Viajantes involuntários: degredados portugueses para a Amazônia colonial

Abstract

Com base em documentação em grande parte inédita, recentemente pesquisada em arquivos e bibliotecas portugueses, este texto chama atenção para um tema ainda muito pouco estudado da história da Amazônia colonial: a existência ali de grande número de degredados, enviados desde Portugal, desde várias regiões brasileiras e desde outras colônias lusitanas, cuja presença foi de muitos modos marcante na região, até 1822. O artigo põe em evidência a complexa política portuguesa do degredo e a diversidade de experiências e de papéis sociais que os degredados vivenciaram na Amazônia.Based in large part on new documentation, recently uncovered in archives and libraries in Portugal, the text focuses on a topic in the history of colonial Amazon that has received very little attention to date: the presence of a large number of banished Portuguese, sent to the region from Portugal itself, from different parts of Brazil, and from other Portuguese colonies. In many ways, these banished individuals had an important effect in the Amazon through 1822. The article points up Portugal’s complex policy of banishment and the diversity of these individuals’ experiences and their social roles in the Amazon.
