Abstract

Several efforts have been attempted by the Government of Indonesia (GOI) to overcome deforestation problem. One of them is done by promoting Community Forestry Program that involves many stakeholders engaged in it. In its implementation, the program should be flexible, innovative and easily adapted to the site as deforestation problem is not only correlated with technical matters but also socioeconomic issues. Subsequently, in order to promote product diversification and to encourage local community to employ their resources (land, capital, labor, etc) more efficiently, an agroforestry model combining major and minor forest product commodities is introduced. This farming model is intended to obtain most favorable land utilization through ameliorating forest structure and composition. The purpose of the research is to find several farming alternatives by diversifying potential minor forest product commodities which could increase land productivity and contribute income significantly to the farmers. The research was carried out in three research sites i.e; Sumedang, Cianjur and Sukabumi Forest Districts using survey method. Data were collected through direct interview with respondents selected purposively. The result showed that land utilization by developing minor forest product commodities could be one promising alternative to increase land productivity and diversification. Potential minor forest product commodities are vanilla and medicinal plants in Sumedang, vanilla and understorey food crops in Cianjur and understorey food crops and vegetable plants in Sukabumi.
