Abstract

The volume is designed as a thorough introduction to the structure and function of the nervous system, taking into account the most recently accepted concepts. The latest views pertaining to the anatomy (particularly the fine structure), degenerative and regenerative changes following injury, nerve cell excitation and inhibition, vascular patterns, neuronal circuits and integrative neuronal mechanisms, have been included. This second edition is completely rewritten and a whole set of new figures has been designed in order to stress a visual approach. As the essential unit of all nervous system function, the nerve cell itself has been considered in particular detail: considerable attention being paid to its origin, formation, structure and function. The text is unique in correlating the structure and function of neurons at all levels of organization. The book is designed on the premise that a complete understanding of the nervous system can only be attained through a truly multidisciplinary approach. All students and scientists at present familiar with the nervous system will find this well illustrated volume an invaluable introduction to this most absorbing subject.
