Abstract

After illustrating a case of incest, the author explains why 'violence is not aggression and the link is not the relationship'. He defines the notions of 'insidious violence' and 'masked violence'. Violence is understood as the paradigm of shame and humiliation. The common theme proposed for dealing with this is the psychoanalytic perspective of stitching, unraveling, and restitching the psychic bonds. The author describes the model of incestuous organization which generates violence, as seen in the case of perverse couples, incestuous families, totalitarian systems, incestuous institutions and sects. The author proposes the notion of a psychological, medical, social and legal 'meta-framework' as an integrative network providing an alternative to the broken individual, familial, institutional and social containers. The narrative of stitching up the organizing myths and the psychological work of ritualization, in particular the ritualization of law, aims to confront violence and to prevent generational repetition of the scenario of violence. This would presuppose training which includes attention to trauma, shame and humiliation.
