Abstract

Crop residue management remains a significant challenge in India's agricultural landscape. Burning these residues in fields contributes to air pollution, global warming, and soil degradation. Adopting slow pyrolysis to transform crop residues into biochar provides a safer disposal avenue. Biochar, a carbon-rich porous material obtained from biomass pyrolysis, was the focus of experimental studies utilizing wheat and rice straw as potential sources for this conversion process. For wheat straw and rice straw derived biochar, the carbon content amounts to 66% and 63%, electrical conductivity (dS m-1) is 2.56 and 3.23, cation exchange Capacity (cmol kg-1) 2.56 and 3.23, and the specific surface area was 289 and 196 m 2 g-1 , respectively.
