Abstract
Considering that positive cognitions about a place can lead to the formation of emotional bonds with it, this study investigated how students would like that certain school spaces were constituted. The research was carried out in a public school in Florianópolis (Brazil). Five hundred and eight students aged from 12 to 20 years who attended the Brazilian basic education system since the seventh year participated in the study by answering an open-ended question questionnaire. According to the statements provided, which were submitted to thematic-categorical content analysis, the aspects to be considered in the best school environment were: environmental conservation and provision of goods for consumption; appropriate furniture and equipment; desirable natural and built elements; thermal, acoustic and luminal comfort; place identification; pleasant environmental sensations; better teachers, more interested students and interesting pedagogical proposals; good services, good interpersonal relationships and a security service which does not restrain students’ freedom.
