Abstract
The study shows the evolution of the clay mining process, since informality, caused by the lack of technical knowledge of the ceramic companies, in the past decades, to the current days, with the operations conducted by a mining cooperative, within the aspects mining law. The case study presents a better use of the available ores in an area of 63.4 hectares, which were mined a total volume of 1,115,000 m3, where of these, 680,000 m3 corresponded to the extraction in areas that once they were abandoned. The development of operations consisted of concentrating the mining fronts from 14 to 3, which were individually mined by the companies, and were now mined by the cooperative, under technical guidance. The economic gain from the change in the production system was approximately R$ 6,690,000.00. So the conclusive character, it was attested that the model that lasted for many years in the southern region of Santa Catarina, fit as ambitious mining, and the new mining methods adopted, increased the useful life of the clay deposits.
