Abstract

Background: The increasing prevalence of digital technology has introduced challenges in marital relationships, referred to as “technoference.” This study explores how digital distractions impact communication, conflict resolution, and emotional intimacy among married couples in India. Methodology: Using a qualitative thematic analysis, in-depth interviews were conducted with 22 married couples to explore their experiences of technoference. Participants were purposively sampled to capture diverse perspectives. Results: Thematic analysis revealed eight major themes: screen time conflicts, social media usage challenges, privacy concerns, perceived neglect, boundary disputes, work versus personal time conflicts, emotional intimacy challenges, and awareness/self-regulation strategies. The findings highlight the negative impact of digital distractions on marital satisfaction and intimacy. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the importance of culturally relevant strategies for managing technology use in relationships, particularly in the Indian context.
