Abstract

Microsatellites have been infrequently used for genetic analysis of odonate species. Here, we report four microsatellite loci that are polymorphic in Coenagrion mercuriale. Furthermore, we examine the success of cross-species amplification of a panel of 19 microsatellite loci that were developed from C. mercuriale in seven other European odonate species. PCR with microsatellite primers is more likely to be achieved in species that are closely related to the species used for marker isolation. Overall, 10 microsatellite loci amplified interpretable PCR products (seven loci were variable) in both C. puella and C. pulchellum, whilst two loci were variable in Ischnura elegans. These markers should facilitate genetic research into these zygopteran species. © 2004 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
