Abstract
A field research program was carried out to investigate the fate of crude oil pilled in dynamic pack, or broken, ice. The presence of ice dramatically reduced the spreading of 1 m3 test spills compared with that expected on open water. Evaporation of the oil and subsequent property changes could be adequately predicted using conventional theories.
