Abstract

This study was conducted for four months (January to April 2019) to analyse factors influencing beef cattle productivities and their development strategies in Dairy Regency, Sumatera Utara Province, Indonesia. There were 239 farmers from three sub-districts in Dairy Regency, namely Siempat Nempu Hulu, Tigalingga, and Sumbul used as respondents in this study. The study used regression and SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats). The regression analysis showed that factors of cattle production such as capital, number of cattle, labour, number of births together have a significant effect on cattle productivity. The results in this study, the coefficient of determination shows the productivity of cattle in the Dairi Regency is influenced by factors production by 90.89%, and other factors outside this study influence the rest. While the SWOT analysis in Dairi Regency showed that there are many strengths and opportunities than weaknesses and threats to develop cattle populations in order to increase their productivities in the regency. It can conclude that the development of beef cattle farming in Dairy Regency has a good prospect to be improved and used as part of sustainable economic growth in order to improve the welfare of farmers in Dairi.
