Abstract

A shoe calender is similar to a shoe press, with some critical differences in the shape and size. Pulp mills are now using shoe calenders to improve drying performance. The smoothness of shoe-nip calendered sheet surfaces differs from that of soft-calendered sheets. The topography of the sheet tends to remain as it was before calendering, while harder calenders tend to push uneven surface areas into the sheet. The shoe-calendered sheet property improves the uniformity of the sheet surface density, thereby improving the uniformity of printing images.
