Abstract

For the realisation of environmental compatible tribosystem in collaborative research centre SFB 442 new PVD-coatings are developed. These improve combined with additive free lubricants the tribological characteristics of this tribosystem. To evaluate these coated compounds for the application in tribosystems, it is important to understand to which loading these systems are exposed to and how their properties affect their mechanical stress. The subject of the presented investigation is an analysis of which coated substrate systems parameter have significant effect on the system strains. The differences between known mechanical stress theories of bulk materials are pointed out and a mathematical model for the description of stresses are developed. The goal of this investigation is to find correlations between tribological loads (for example roller bearing) and coated substrate testing stresses (for example Rockwell test, Nanoindenter measurement). With these, it is possible to use the results of coated substrate tests to evaluate the coated substrate system. A crucial aid herein is the simulation of surface loading using FEM (Finite Element Method). With this method, it is possible to regard the anisotropic and inhomogeneous material characteristics of a coated substrate system.
