Cow Identification and Recording Systems

Abstract

Accurate identification of individual animals and a system of keeping valid records are major prerequisites in the effective management of large dairy herds. There are several permanent and nonpermanent methods of identification to establish programs within herds provided the dairyman will invest the time, money, and diligence to establish and maintain it permanently. The prospects for improved methods through electronics is encouraging. The development of this technique will provide for utilization of automated equipment that will identify cows and record routine production and physiological data. Future record systems through National Cooperative Dairy Herd Improvement Program will provide dairymen with a large array of management information that will increase the profitability of the dairy business. © 1978, American Dairy Science Association.
