Abstract

Retained austenite lattice parameters are rapidly reduced from the equilibrium austenite ones with martensitic transformations. This reduction can be attributed to a stress effect caused by volume changes. Reduction may depend not only on the degree of the compressive stress but also on compressibility of austenite against the compressive stress. The large difference in alpha parameters may come from the anomalous decrease on heating attributed to a carbon atom ordering from the tetrahedral site to the octahedral site.
