Abstract
Drawing on the everyday experience of collaborative design, and using ordinary language, the writer examines the nature of design practices and rules, how they evolved, and how they are used. He offers some argument to suggest that designers' conventional ways of thinking about rules are wrong. In conclusion, he argues that the practice of designing and doing philosophy are merging, opening up exciting new possibilities.
