Awards and Recognitions [MicroBusiness]

Abstract

Someone suggested that we create an award for our employees. Every year, we would select an employee for recognition based on accomplishments over the past year. I rejected the idea. It seemed to me that this award would result in one gratified employee every year and many annoyed ones. I'm reminded of what Lewis Carroll, who was both an author and a mathematician, wrote in Through the Looking Glass. In it, Alice, the protagonist, realizes that every year, people have only one birthday. Every other day of the year is their unbirthday. If I give an award to one employee, every other employee is a nonawardee.
