Abstract

This study reviews how the three main Portuguese sports newspapers - O Jogo, A Bola and Record – rank sports and its modalities in the journalistic coverage. The main purpose is to understand how the Portuguese culture context influences the coverage and the primacy of football when compared to the other sports, but also the impact that geographic proximity has on the development of Sports Journalism. In order to achieve this purpose, it was carried out a daily analysis of O Jogo, A Bola and Record from May 11th to May 17th. Results confirm that football still is the main focus of Sports Journalism, but also show that FC Porto, SL Benfica and Sporting CP are the most covered football clubs. This study reflects the need of more diverse coverage in the Portuguese context, but also the influence that sports have in the Portuguese culture and in the Portuguese media/journalistic environment.
