Abstract
In persons with intellectual disability (ID), somatic symptom and related disorder (SSRD) are often overlooked, although they seem to be more frequent across the lifespan than in the general population, especially in those with co-occurrent autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Aetiology is undefined, probably with a multifactorial origin. Therefore, a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment, which includes a developmental and clinical history from parents or carers, neurological examination and indicated investigations, is essential for an appropriate diagnosis, particularly in persons with more severe ID and limited or no language. Early multimodal intervention has to be favoured.
