Transnational organized crime and peace: amazon security and regional environmental governance

Abstract

This research article analyzes the security and environmental governance challenges facing Amazonian countries following the signing of the 2016 Peace Agreement between the Colombian State and the FARC-EP. Specifically, it aims to understand how the Escazú Agreement aligns with a notion of security that addresses these challenges, particularly in light of the growing threat of transnational organized crime and in the post-agreement context. Based on Buzan’s theory of security complexes, the implications and factors involved in this context are examined, aiming to determine an approach that effectively addresses the threats posed by transnational organized crime and facilitates the participation of local actors, thereby ensuring and strengthening environmental governance.
