Abstract

The research of the potential rambutan peel as a sunscreen and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus have been done. The purpose of this research is to determine the activity of rambutan peel which can inhibit bacterial growth and potential as a sunscreen. This research used an experimental method that began by extracting rambutan peels which were made into gel preparations with 3 variant formulas at a concentration of 0.5%; 1%; and 2%. Gel preparations were evaluated by characteristic test and antibacterial activity was determined by measuring the inhibition diameter using a diffusion method. While the sunscreen activity was determined by measuring the absorbance value using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results showed the preparations fulfilled the gel characteristics test requirements. Based on the data obtained in testing, the optimum antibacterial activity and sunscreen activity with high protection against UV rays are at a concentration of 2% with an SPF value of 35.41.
